Why DO We Call Them "Honor Killings," Anyway?

I recently read an excellent article, pursuant to my connection with the ABA Individual Rights and Responsibilities Section... which started me on a whole new pursuit of potential answers to this question. The author's headline here reflects a concern about how Western journalists and pundits (I'm sure these do not include any mental health or legal folks) romanticize these killings and mutilations. Many of these are currently occurring on our own USA soil, rather than off in a land far, far, away. That is really what caught my attention and made me take a good hard look at my own assumptions and sense of denial. One of the authors asked if there was any other situation in which the mutilation of girls and women was in any way associated with the word "Honor." I see their point and want to share it with you...
